Riddley

Riddley Walker is only 13, but he lives in a world where no-one gets the chance to be a child for long. Following a catastrophic global nuclear disaster based around Canterbury in the south of England, long before the book starts, humanity is struggling back into a semblance of order. A thousand years or so of nomadic scraping a living from a poisoned soil is beginning to give way to farming and an embryonic beaurocracy. When his father is killed in diggings, attempts to salvage long defunct technologies from the earth where they lie buried, Riddley finds himself caught in a new wave of struggles to reconstruct the 1 big 1, the power ring, from the dregs of myth, rumour and dream that swirl around the tribes, farms and quasi-officialdom.
